The Euromex polarimeter PM.5400 is a scientific instrument used to measure the angle of rotation caused by passing polarized light through an optically active substance. This highly accurate device is an optimized Mitscherlich type polarimeter which are suitable for fast and acurate measurements of sugars and glucose on food and beverage industry, perfume and chemical substances for pharmaceuticals industry and medical drugs. In many case, the Euromex PM.5400 Mitscherlich polarimeter also allows practical determination of optically active substances like amino acids, steroid compounds to solid transparent materials like quartz, crystal glass, diamond, and other minerals as well.

Euromex Polarimeter PM.5400 works using the principle of optical deflection in a sense that many chemical substances are optically active, and polarized (unidirectional) light will rotate either to the left (counter-clockwise) or right (clockwise) when passed through these substances. The amount by which the light is rotated is known as the angle of rotation. Euromex Polarimeter PM.5400 measure this by passing monochromatic light through the first of two polarising plates, creating a polarized beam. This first plate is known as the polarizer. This light beam is then rotated as it passes through the specimen. The number of rotation itself is dependent with the molecular composition and proportional to the concentration of chiral molecules. Each optically active substance has its specific rotation factor as defined by Biot’s law. After passing through the specimen, a second polarizer, known as the analyzer, rotates either via manual rotation or automatic detection of the angle. When the analyzer is rotated to the proper angle, the maximum amount of light will pass through and shine onto a detector.
